Clear Glass Light Bulbs
The Golden age of lighting is from 1900-1950's. The first electric lighted
Christmas tree was in 1882. An associate of Thomas Edison, Edward
Johnson is credited to have had the first lighted Christmas tree. The main
interest in this form of lighting was safety to prevent fires. The bulbs
were blown glass globes with carbon filaments. These were found to burn
very hot. In later years tungsten, was the choice filament cooler burning
and safer. They were made in colored glass and others painted to have
color. In later years they were made in to holiday shapes. There were Santa
Claus, angles, fruits, flowers, snowmen, clowns and popular characters. In
the early beginning, molds from ornaments were the first shapes made into
bulbs. The bulbs were made in several countries. Austria, Germany, Hungry,
Japan and the United States. Noma, Mazda, General Electric, Zelco, M.
Propp, and Ever Ready are just a sampling of the companies that produced
electric bulbs.
The bulb makers changed to milk glass in the 1920's. It was found, the
paint stayed on the milk glass. The cracking of the paint with the
expansion from the heat was lessened with the milk glass bulb. The varied
types and manufactures make collecting clear bulbs a gratifying en devour.
